Yes. The food may be safely refrozen as long as the food is cold to the touch or at 40°F (4°C) or below. Please evaluate each meal individually. According the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), partial thawing and refreezing may slightly reduce the quality of some foods, but they will remain safe to eat.

In general, frozen meals that have been sitting out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours should be thrown away. If room temperature exceeds 90°F (32°C), discard any frozen meals that have been sitting out for longer than 1 hour.

Frozen meals can stay safely unrefrigerated for 2 hours if the air temperature is under 90°F, and for 1 hour if the air temperature is 90°F or higher.

Frozen meals can be put into a portable cooler with ice or frozen gel packs and stored for as long as the inside cooler temperature stays below 40°F (4°C). Once the temperature exceeds 40F, the meals should be discarded after 2 hours.

For optimal quality, we recommend that meals should remain frozen until you're ready to heat and eat. Bearing that in mind, as long as the refrigerator stays below 40°F (4°C), our frozen meals can be kept in a refrigerator for a total of 5-7 days before heating and eating (during which time they will gradually thaw). Once the meal is reheated, it should be kept in the refrigerator for no more than 3-4 more days before eating or discarding.

If a PK meal has been reheated or thawed in a refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze the unused portion unless it has been left outside of a refrigerator for longer than 2 hours.

We recommend microwaving only one meal at a time. While it is possible to microwave two meals at once, doing so will require a significantly longer cook time to reach a minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Because microwave ovens cook unevenly, it's possible that this may impact the quality of the meals--one meal may become overcooked, while the other may still remain cold in places. If you do need to cook multiple meals at once, we recommend using a conventional oven. Simply arrange the meals in a single layer, puncture the film of each meal, and begin cooking. Check the meals periodically until done.

Yes. According to the USDA, as long as foods remain frozen, they will remain safe to eat indefinitely. That said, quality may decrease slightly if a food remains frozen and unused beyond its best-by date. Because freezer air is very dry, foods may lose some of their moisture and become slightly tough over time.

As long as the freezer door remains closed, most freezers will hold a safe temperature at or below 32°F (0°C) for 48 hours if full, or 24 hours if half full. If you suspect your freezer isn't working properly, check meal temperature once the power comes back on to verify the food is at or below 32°F (0°C). If the power is off, do not check the temperature of your freezer! Opening the door (and allowing warm air to come in), will significantly increase the temperature of your freezer.

If you open your order and there is no dry ice left, look at your meals--if they arrived frozen, partially frozen, or cold to the touch (as if you had just taken it out of the refrigerator)--then they're safe to eat per USDA guidelines. Simply place the meals in your freezer to refreeze and when ready to eat, follow the cooking instructions on each product's packaging. Please note that once a shipment of meals has been opened, the temperature of the meal packaging will increase much faster than the actual temperature of the food. If in doubt, remove the product packaging and inspect each meal individually to determine if it remains safe.
